We officially kicked off our 50th Anniversary celebrations on the 2nd May 2026 with one of the most daring and exciting fundraising events we have ever hosted – the Wildheart Wire Walk.
A total of 42 incredible participants took on the challenge of crossing a 70-metre-long highwire suspended high above the Sanctuary grounds. It was a day filled with courage, determination, laughter, and community spirit, and together, our supporters raised an amazing £15,000 to help support our rescued animals and the vital work we do every day.
From local businesses and organisations including Red Funnel, Nosy Creative Agency, and Visit Isle of Wight, to members of our own Wildheart team, the event brought people together for a truly unforgettable experience. Our staff team alone raised an impressive £1,422.
One of the most inspiring moments of the day came from 80-year-old participant Pat Whybrow, who captured the hearts of everyone involved by raising more than £1,500 and proving that age is no barrier to taking on a challenge. Reflecting on the experience, Pat said:
“I never imagined I’d be doing something like this at 80, but it just goes to show you’re never too old to take on a new challenge – especially for such an important cause!”
Our CEO, Lawrence Bates, also took part in the Wire Walk and summed up the atmosphere perfectly:
“The Wire Walk was an extraordinary way to begin our 50th Anniversary year. To see 42 people step so far outside of their comfort zones in support of our animals was genuinely inspiring. Raising over £15,000 is a fantastic achievement, but just as important is the sense of community and shared purpose behind it. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who took part, our sponsors, and the Island businesses who made this event possible. This is just the start of what promises to be a very special year for Wildheart.”

This event marks just the beginning of an exciting year of celebrations as we commemorate 50 years of rescuing animals, providing lifelong care, and inspiring people to protect wildlife.
Next up in our anniversary calendar is Run Wild, our brand-new 5K family fun run taking place on Sunday 5th July. We would love for our community to get involved once again and help support the future of the Sanctuary.
Following the incredible response to this year’s Wire Walk, plans are already underway for 2027, and pre-registration is now open for anyone interested in taking part next year.
