At Wildheart Animal Sanctuary, we’re always looking for new ways to reduce our environmental impact and become more sustainable. That’s why we’re delighted to welcome an exciting new addition to the Sanctuary – a large-scale wormery, generously donated by The Worm Farm.

This innovative composting system will help us recycle food and garden waste from across the Sanctuary, transforming it into nutrient-rich vermicompost that can be used to grow fresh produce for many of the animals in our care.

Turning waste into something wonderful

The new wormery is already home to around 2,000 composting worms, with the population expected to grow to over 10,000 as the system becomes established. Once fully operational, the worms will consume approximately two litres of food and garden waste every day, producing between 20 and 40 kilograms of nutrient-rich compost every week.

That compost will be used by our dedicated Garden Club to grow fruit, vegetables and plants for the Sanctuary’s animals, helping us reduce waste, cut costs and create a more sustainable, circular approach to managing resources.

A smarter way to compost

The wormery supplied by The Worm Farm is a specialist “flow-through” system. Unlike traditional compost bins, compost can be harvested from the bottom while the worms continue feeding undisturbed above, keeping them healthy and productive.

By diverting organic waste from our café and gardens, the wormery will significantly reduce the amount of waste leaving the Sanctuary while creating a valuable natural fertiliser that supports healthy soils and thriving plants.

Learning from nature

The project isn’t just about compost – it’s also about education.

Alongside the larger working wormery, we’ve installed a smaller demonstration unit that will be used during Garden Club sessions and educational activities, giving visitors, volunteers and budding gardeners the chance to discover how worms play a vital role in healthy ecosystems.

Often overlooked, worms are some of nature’s greatest recyclers. As they feed on decaying organic matter, they produce nutrient-rich castings that improve soil health, encourage strong plant growth and support sustainable food production.
