Celebrating the young people making a difference on the Isle of Wight

There was plenty to celebrate at this year’s Isle of Wight Radio Child of Wight Awards, as young Islanders were recognised for their courage, kindness, determination, talent and commitment to making a difference.

Held at Tapnell Farm on Friday 4 September, the 2026 awards brought together children and their families for an evening celebrating some of the Island’s most inspirational young people.

We were particularly proud to be there as sponsors of the Young Conservationist Award – a category that is especially close to our hearts here at Wildheart Animal Sanctuary.

And this year’s winners were a brilliant example of why giving young people the opportunity to make a difference really matters.

The Young Conservationist Award went to brother and sister Harry and Joanna Burdett, who have made caring for their local environment part of everyday life.

Harry first began litter picking in 2022 and, after winning the Young Conservationist Award himself in 2024, has continued to champion the importance of looking after the places we all share.

Now he has inspired his younger sister Joanna to join him, and together they have become known as the “Mini Wombles” of the Vectis Wombles group.

Whether it’s before or after school, while out on family walks or enjoying a day at the beach, Harry and Joanna are always ready to pick up their litter pickers and help keep the Island beautiful.

Their enthusiasm has also encouraged friends, family and classmates to get involved – showing just how contagious a passion for conservation can be.

And their commitment goes beyond simply collecting rubbish.

During one litter-picking session, Harry even discovered a lost iPhone. Rather than keeping it, he handed it in so it could be returned to its owner – a lovely example of the kindness and community spirit that sits alongside their environmental work.

At Wildheart, we believe that conservation isn’t something that should wait until you’re an adult.

Young people have an important role to play in protecting the natural world, and Harry and Joanna are showing exactly what can happen when children are given the encouragement and opportunity to get involved.

Their story is a reminder that making a difference doesn’t always require grand gestures. Picking up a piece of litter, encouraging a friend to do the same, or simply taking pride in the places around us can all add up to something much bigger.

We’re delighted to have sponsored a category that recognises this kind of commitment, and we couldn’t think of more deserving winners.

Congratulations Harry and Joanna – we hope you keep inspiring the next generation of Island conservationists!

The Young Conservationist Award was just one of a number of categories celebrating the incredible things young Islanders are achieving.

This year’s winners included:

  • Fundraiser of the Year: Fred Eccleston Hall
  • Best Friend: Amy Marchant and Akita Smith
  • Best Performer: Chloe and Anna Meredith
  • Best Sibling: Octavia
  • Young Achiever: Evelyn Bennett
  • Sporting Star: Harrison Carter
  • Asa Singleton Courageous Child: Oscar De Crescenzo-Joy
  • Make A Difference: Riley Edwards
  • Young Carer: Finley Chitty
  • Inspiration Award: Demi McBride
  • Overall Child of Wight 2026: Phoenix Haywood

The overall award went to Phoenix Haywood, whose resilience and determination impressed the judges. Phoenix was diagnosed with a rare tumour at the age of six, but has continued to pursue her passions for dance and creative activities, raise money for charity and even launch her own vegan dog biscuit business, Wight Wags Bakery.

Across every category, the awards highlighted the remarkable contribution young people are making to Island life – whether through supporting others, raising money, pursuing their talents, overcoming challenges or helping their communities and environment.

As an animal sanctuary dedicated to animal welfare, conservation and creating a more sustainable future, we’re delighted to support an event that shines a light on young people who are already making a difference.

The Child of Wight Awards are a wonderful reminder that inspiration can come in many forms – and that age is no barrier to having a positive impact.

Congratulations to Harry and Joanna, and to every one of this year’s Child of Wight winners. You should all be incredibly proud of what you’ve achieved.

And a huge thank you to Isle of Wight Radio for bringing everyone together to celebrate the Island’s inspirational young people, and to all the families, teachers, volunteers and supporters who encourage them along the way.

Here’s to the next generation of conservationists, fundraisers, carers, performers, athletes, campaigners and community champions! 💚
