After a long journey from Spain, we’re thrilled to be welcoming Isax the serval to our Sanctuary on the Isle of Wight!
Isax is a nine-year-old female serval who was previously kept in the house of a private owner. After she was confiscated by the Spanish authorities, she went to live at AAP Primadomus in Alicante, a rescue centre run by the European animal welfare organisation AAP (Animal Advocacy and Protection).
During her time at AAP, Isax was introduced to another serval called Nela, and the two lived happily together until Nela sadly passed away last year. When we heard that Isax was looking for company, we got in touch with AAP to see if she could come to live with our male serval Xirus, who tragically lost his brother Tafkap to an unexpected congenital disorder in August 2024.
Servals are a naturally solitary species, but as Isax and Xirus are both used to living with another serval, it was decided that introducing them to each other would be beneficial to them both. This move also frees up valuable space at AAP Primadomus for another rescued animal needing rehabilitation.
Isax left AAP Primadomus on Wednesday, 28th May, and travelled to us via road with Ventura Wildlife Services. The next day, she reached the Island thanks to a crossing over the Solent generously provided by Wightlink Isle of Wight Ferries.
Isax arrived at our Sanctuary on Thursday, 29th May. Our animal team brought her crate straight into one of the serval bedrooms, so that she can get accustomed to her new surroundings gradually. In the coming days, Isax and Xirus will be allowed to see each other for the first time, which will be part of their longer introduction process. It is our hope that eventually the two will be able to share one habitat!
