In 2012 we were joined by a little bundle of fluff, Darwin the baby tawny owl. Now fully grown, Darwin lives in his own aviary opposite our noisy cockatoos! Can you spot him through the branches?
Our Birds and Fish
Our friendly birds here at the Sanctuary are full of character. Say “hello” to Sam and Guedo, our Goffin’s Cockatoos, and spot Darwin the Tawny Owl in his aviary. Our Koi Carp live in their own pond next to our spider monkeys. Come and admire their beautiful scales!
Goffin’s Cockatoo – This breed of cockatoo is also known as the Tanimbar Corella, after the islands in Indonesia where they originate from.
Tawny Owls – Tawny owls are found throughout Europe and are also resident in Britain. These owls are responsible for the distinctive “twit-twoo” noise most people associate with owls. It is the females who make the “twit” noises while the males reply with “twoo”.
Koi Carp – Koi are colourful varieties of Carp that are often kept for decorative purposes in outdoor ponds.

Our cheeky male, Sam, came to us in need of a new home after his private owner could no longer care for him. Guedo joined us from Dudley Zoo as a companion for Sam.

We have a charming group of Koi here at the Sanctuary – including Flip, Flap & Flop! They were formerly pets and came to us from a private owner. Thanks to generous corporate sponsorship, we were able to build a new pond for them.
